-> Tribal Internet Company Website

Redevelopment of company's existing static website to a database-driven one. I built the HTML/CSS templates based on a jpeg supplied by our designer. Then PHP tags were added enabling dynamic content. Content management achieved through the company's own CMS product (see TribalCMS project)

-> Promptext Online Text Messaging

I've been involved in several phases of work on Promptext. Firstly designing and implementing a restructure of their database, plus data migration (1000s of accounts and transaction details) from the live site.

At the same time the site underwent a complete front-end redesign. This involving creating HTML/CSS templates from a jpeg supplied by the designer. Few slight glitches in the CSS on some browsers as we ran out of design time on this, so it's optimised for IE/PC.

Most recently I've been writing a Perl daemon to allow sending of SMS via SMPP routing rather than HTTP. In addition to Perl scripting, this involved a lot of shell work controlling the daemons and observing the error logs!

-> Open Roads Online Holiday Booking

So far I have had two main involvements with Open Roads. Firstly, developing the complex menu system suitable for displaying a huge amount of content at different hierarchical levels. The client wanted CSS drop-down menus up to 4 levels deep. The entire menu is preloaded, and everything becomes visible in the user's current path (top menu). The client also wanted a clickable menu in which siblings (at the same hierarchical level) disappear from the list once one is selected, to prevent menus from becoming too long (left menu).

Secondly I regularly generate and run SQL data patches to add or update hotel data.

I've also done many small jobs such as a dynamic sitemap and

-> ELGA LabWater

A standard redesign job creating HTML/CSS templates from jpeg supplied by our designer. Main challenge was developing the 4-level CSS popout menus to work x-platform. Once design was complete, templates were converted to PHP to allow dynamic content.

-> USA-Stationery

Building the E-Commerce site "USA-Stationery" based on the popular open-source osCommerce, but with significant functional and database modifications. The brief also involved customising the front end according to jpeg supplied by our designer.

-> TribalCMS Content Management System

This is our company's main product, which we offer as open source, or charge for a customised installation. It can be downloaded free from TribalCMS.com or viewed in action on the standard and enterprise demo sites.

I've been involved with a lot of the codebase of this project, writing new classes and admin screens, as well as the complete front-end design (which was supposed to be as simple as possible).

My favourite achievement on this site is coding the "add a shortcut" system whereby any page or item on the site can be linked to any other independant of position in the menu, using title, image and subtext if desired. This can only be seen on our latest download (version 4.1.0) and not yet on the demo sites. This took several days of PHP and JavaScript coding to get it functioning.

Obviously many other people have contributed to this code so I can't vouch for it being bug-free, I can only vouch confidence in the bits I have writen! Known bugs are being fixed all the time during development.

-> PHD Mountain Software

A dynamic, multilingual, multi-currency e-commerce site built single-handedly for UK-based retailer Peter Hutchinson Designs.

A 4-month MSc project began with research to find the most economical solution for all the client's requirements.

Site was based on the open source osCommerce software but significantly altered, and integrated with SecPay payment gateway to allow online transactions.

The admin tool (password protected) allows maintenance of all site content on a language-by-language basis.

Visual design was not a priority, and restricted by functionality/time constraints.

Final month of the project involced user / platform testing (and iterating design), and writing a 20,000 word dissertation.

Featuring: Expensive range of mountaineering clothing, bespoke functionality and front-end to osCommerce.

-> TM Facilities

Brief was to design and build an Extranet -practically singlehandedly- for a Facilities Management Company (they test the safety of electrical items). The Extranet enables their customers to log in, access their data, filter it and print reports. (Previously data was sent to customers on CD).

Required database design to allow efficient querying of several million records to display filtered/paginated datasets to the logged-in user. And also for dynamically generating reports in downloadable PDF, Excel or Zipped formats.

-> Aqua 2001

Established in October 2001, this is my longest-running website. Ever-growing in popularity despite the band's split, it currently attracts up to 300 unique visitors per week. Nothing impressively technical about this site, though it has undergone several redesigns since launch. It is soon to upgrade to PHP to facilitate maintenance. Regularly updated content and translations on request (from Danish/Norwegian/Swedish into English) are the key to its popularity.

-> Shorebirds site for Behaviour-Based Modelling Group

This site was built singlehandedly for the Behaviour-based Modelling Group at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH). It uses pure CSS layout, save corporate header and footer, which unfortunately use tables. ASP and CSS were used to enable maintenance. Navigational includes make adding new pages efficient. CSS was used to enable updating maps (showing sites the client had worked on in different continents) without having to create new graphics. (See case studies page).

Featuring: Interactive CSS maps, Bird modelling animations.

-> Food and Food Production

First piece of MSc coursework. Involved researching a given topic (my section is livestock breeding), finding relevant interviewees, recording telephone interviews to minidisc, editing the WAV files and streaming as RealMedia. SMIL was used to concurrently stream a transcript (RealText) in English or French. The finished site (of which each topic was a part) was for the French Ministry of Agriculture in conjunction with their annual Salon Internationale de l'Agriculture, so a significant proportion of the target audience was expected to be French.

Only the breeding section is mine, the other topics are by other students.

-> Salon Internationale de l'Agriculture

This was the official site of the annual Salon Internationale de l'Agriculture, a 10-day agricultural show held in Paris, which attracted 1400 exhibitors and 655,070 paying visitors in 2003. The site content was produced by a collaboration of French, English, Spanish and German journalism students reporting daily on the show in thier own languages. The 2003 site has unfortunately been taken offline to make way for the current version so this link leads to a saved example page. (The current SIA site can be seen at www.salon-agriculture.com).
