COMPENSATION FOR THE FARMING COMMUNITY

Every British livestock farmer was affected by foot and mouth. Foreign meat exports were lost, and domestic livestock markets closed. Business was also lost beyond the obvious, as in the case of the Grange Farm in Leicestershire, which had a turkey franchise. The turkey owners cancelled the contract in fear that they wouldn't be able to collect the turkeys when ready for sale. As turkeys are livestock, they too were affected by livestock movement restrictions. Farmers received no government support to cover indirect loss of income.
